OrthodoxNorthwest, the big brother

If you haven't been to OrthodoxNorthwest blog, you should go and check it out, especially if you like to travel around the beautiful Northwest. You can subscribe to their news and be informed of many Orthodox events in the area way before they take place. You will also find tons of useful links in their right column.

Although OrthodoxNorthwest is technically younger than OrthodoxPortland, it really looks like an older sibling should one judge by the contents. Of course, there will always be some overlap between their posts and ours, but we hope that each site serve its own purpose.

Greek Orthodox choir from Denver to perform at Portland churches

The Cathedral Choir of the Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Metropolis Cathedral of Denver, Colorado plans a concert tour this October with two stops at Portland-area Greek Orthodox churches.

The choir, under the direction of Dr. James N. Maniatis, has travelled more than 25,000 miles across the United States and internationally to offer over 100 concerts of Greek Orthodox hymns, Byzantine chant, Greek folk songs, and sacred choral music.

Two concerts in the Portland area are open to the public. Admission is free. A free-will offering will be accepted at the door with proceeds benefiting the local Greek Orthodox parishes.

Concert: Friday 14 October 2011, 7:00 PM
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral
3131 NE Gilsan Street, Portland OR 97232
Rev. Fr. Jordan Brown – Presiding Priest, (503) 234-0468

St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church

Additionally, the choir will sing hymns and responses during normal Sunday (16 October) church services at Holy Trinity Cathedral. Again, the public is invited. Orthros (matins) begin at 9:00 AM and the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom will commence at 10:00 AM.

The Cathedral Choir of Denver has, for over forty years, maintained the tradition of presenting musical programs to the Denver community. Over time, the parish has expanded its music ministry to travel throughout the United States to promote fellowship and showcase the talent of our Greek-American composers. In 1993, the choir represented the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in a summer tour of Greece. The choir performed a concert tour of Toronto, Canada in 2008. The choir has produced three recordings, appeared on television, and recorded multi-media production backdrops for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The Orthodox music selected for the Portland concert program is representative of the entire Greek Orthodox liturgical cycle.

Special service for departed babies

On Saturday, October 15th, the Church of Annunciation will have vespers at 6pm and a special prayer service at 7pm for babies who have died as a result of miscarriage, abortion or early infant death.

The Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Movement began in the United States On October 25, 1988 when former American President Ronald Reagan designated the month of October 1988 as "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month." It is now commemorated on October 15th as "The International Wave of Light" as candles are lit in various time zones at 7pm.

The service will be a combination of the panikhida and funeral for a child. This is an opportunity to reach out to those who have suffered loss. Please invite anyone whom you feel would benefit from this prayer service. Also, you may wish to light a candle for someone else's child.
