The Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum is offering Rare Russian Icons for Purchase during the Month of May

A rare opportunity to purchase exquisite Orthodox icons from a private collection is offered by the Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum throughout the month of May.

Ken Shores, retired Lewis & Clark College professor of art, has collected these beautiful icons over the last 40 years, including travels to Russia. Most are icons from the 19th Century that are almost impossible to find now. They are icons written on wood, some for doors and others for walls of a church.

In addition, the May exhibit displays early works from the museum’s collection of paintings by Marguerite Frances Sylvia. The artist created an extraordinary body of work that captures the essence of village life on the Greek island of Lesbos.

Thanks to OrthodoxNorthwest!

Renaissance England, Romantic Russia

Saturday, April 28, at 7:30 pm
Sunday, April 29 at 3:00 pm
Eliot Chapel, First Unitarian Church
1011 SW 12th Ave. Portland, OR 97205

The Choral Arts Ensemble, under the direction of Tracey Edson*, will be presenting a program of rich choral music from 16th c. England and 19th-20th c. Russia.

William Byrd's Mass for Five Voices, with Easter motets inserted, will be featured in the first half.  In the second half, Russian sacred music by Chesnokov, Gretchaninoff and Rachmaninoff will be featured.

While separated by a thousand miles and two centuries, these two blocs of music emphasize rich choral colors, crystalline textures, and refined but dramatic emotion.

Orthodox listeners will recognize meaningful texts and familiar melodies cast in fulfilling settings.

Advance purchase tickets are $15.00 general admission, $12.00 for seniors, and $10.00 for students; they can be purchased at Choral Arts website. For more information about this program, check out the website, call 503-488-3834, or contact Joe Baker, Marketing Director, at joe@caeportland.com.

* Tracey is Director of Liturgical Music at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.
